OVERVIEW
As a former researcher, visual communication of science has always been about both illustration and data visualization for me. In my work, I collaborate with companies to create and redesign charts that effectively communicate complex data. As part of my training, I often enjoy working with datasets on interesting, current topics in medicine and science, brainstorming ideas to visually communicate this data in more engaging and compelling ways. You can find several examples of these personal projects here.

Tick-borne Diseases in Portugal
In March 2024 the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) published their 2023 Vector Surveillance Network Report on Culicids, Ixodids, and Sandflies. I was immediately curious to see the results and decided to play around with the data and create a small collection of data visualizations that could be easily understood. I have focused on ticks and two zoonoses: Lyme Disease and Mediterranean Spotted Fever, both of which have been reported in Portugal.

STRAY ANIMALS IN PORTUGAL
In 2022 alone, a staggering 42,000 (!) abandoned animals were rescued in Portugal. This alarming figure, recently reported in several newspapers, left me shocked. As a pet owner myself, I can't fathom the idea of abandoning an animal.
Furthermore, in a country where animal lives are often considered secondary, and amidst a severe economic crisis, these distressing numbers of abandoned animals are likely to increase.
This is what compelled me to delve deep into the data from the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) and the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Affairs (DGAV), and to create a small dataviz project to gain a better understanding of this phenomenon. This project aims to visualize and provide clarity on the dynamics of rescued, adopted, sterilized, and euthanized animals in Portugal, between 2017–2022. I invite you to join me on this journey, and I hope you find it informative and engaging. Make sure to see in full screen mode for better quality.

Monkeypox Transmission & Symptoms
Illustration developed to raise awareness for the increasing number of newly-diagnosed human cases of monkeypox in Europe and US in May 2022.
Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease endemic to Central and West Africa. The virus can be transmitted from animals to humans, and between humans. The disease is usually self-limiting, and any person can be affected, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.
Suicide and Mental Health in the Veterinary Community
To mark the World Suicide Prevention Day (10 Sep), and in anticipation to the World Mental Health Day (10 Oct), I have created a small infographic raising awareness to these serious issues afflicting veterinarians worldwide.
In Canada, Germany, Norway, UK, or USA several studies have identified vets at being at a higher risk of suicide and suicide ideation compared to the general population. I have witness the toll this amazing-yet-demaning profession has had on friends and colleagues – low compensation, stressful work environments, long and night shifts, and also bullying by pet owners and society in general who still regards vets as money-grabbers.
These issues are real but they can be treated. If you are experience mental health issues, or know of someone who might need help, please reach out to a professional team.

Easy Water-Saving Tips
One Health is a sustainable and ever-expanding approach, bringing together concepts of Public Health, Veterinary Medicine and Environment. As a medical illustrator, most of my work focuses on Human and Animal Health, but now, more than ever, it’s important to create more education materials on the devastating consequences of Climate Change.
I have created the infographic above in 2022, while floods covered a third of Pakistan, severe droughts were decimating Mediterranean countries like Portugal and Spain. Implementing strategies to save water and energy are no longer a matter of 'When' but rather of 'How'. Here are some easy DIY water-saving tips everyone can start applying in their household.
