PROJECT
I was contacted by the editorial team at Raiz Editora, a Portuguese publisher of school textbooks, to create a series of illustrations for their new 6th-grade science textbook. The topics included the anatomy and physiology of various organ systems in humans and other animal species as well as basic concepts in infectious disease and microbiology.
The client requested realistic scientific illustrations, particularly for communicating specific processes such as vaccination and hygiene practices. To ensure the material was age-appropriate, a degree of abstraction was used to avoid overly graphic or complex images. We also aimed to depict realistic 6th graders, reflecting the natural diversity of students in terms of gender, ethnicity, and body type.
Additionally, all illustrations were designed to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), making the content accessible to colorblind users and optimized for digital platforms.

/ Giraffe's Digestive System: Giraffes, much like cows and goats, are ruminants, animals with a specialized digestive system made up of four compartments: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and the abomasum. This illustration highlights both the structure of these compartments and the journey food takes as it moves through the system.
/ Digestive Anatomy of a Common Waxbill. Here is a simplified anatomy of a granivore bird, using the beautifully-colorful Common Waxbill (Estrilda astrild) as a model.
/ Fish Respiratory System. Fish use gills for respiration - water enters through the mouth and passes over the gills, where dissolved oxygen is extracted and carbon dioxide is released. Gills are composed of thin filaments called lamellae, which greatly increase the surface area for efficient gas exchange
/ Human Respiratory Anatomy. The client wanted the representation of the human figure to be dynamic (e.g. kid in motion, exercising) and representative of the target audience.
